 Our Greatest Freedoms

This past week as our nation celebrated its 238th anniversary, we celebrated the freedoms that we have been granted.  The fact that you are able to read this newsletter article is a result of that freedom.  In some countries around our world such mail would not be permitted to circulate.  Religious tolerance is not permitted, nor is the freedom of speech and the press.  Much of what is said must be guarded, because of the dangers that are brought on those who share openly.

I rejoice with so many of our freedoms.  However, times are changing.  Sadly, many things are moving from the area of freedom into licenses, where sin becomes permissible and even celebrated.  At the same time other freedoms are being more and more restricted.  We recognize a movement of political correctness in our society, which allows only one permissible expression of opinion (the one deemed acceptable at the moment).  Anyone who expresses a different opinion is in danger of being labeled as being hate-filled, a bigot, or intolerant.

Freedom comes at a price and the greatest freedoms have come at the ultimate price.  They came when Christ freely gave His life at Calvary.  Jesus said that “Therefore, if the son makes you free, you are free indeed” (John 8:36).  With Jesus came our greatest freedoms.  In Him, we find freedom from the law, from sin and from death.  The law, although created to illustrate our shortcomings, and help us to realize we cannot live up to its standard.  When we break the law at one point, we have broken it all together.  Christ fulfilled the law and canceled the weight that it placed on mankind.  But being free from the law does by no means give us the right to a license of sin.  In Christ, we strive to be holy before an awesome and wonderful God.

In Christ, we are free from the sins of our past.  They are forgiven.  The debt is paid.  They no longer have a control over our lives.  Could you imagine carrying the weight of all the things you have done wrong on your backs.  Many people do.  Christ removes that baggage, setting us free.  There is something to celebrate.

One thing that often paralyzes so many people from living fully is fear and the greatest fear is the fear of death.  Christ has defeated death, and displayed His power over death with His resurrection.                 These three areas of freedom are the greatest freedoms we can attain and we do so through the person and work of Jesus.  Regardless of the changes in our society, these freedoms can be celebrated all 365 days of the year.  Come Sunday and celebrate what you have received in Christ.

Music Notes From Cyndi  while Ladell is away.

Wow!  Sunday was awesome.  It is so neat to see how God has displayed the Gospel story throughout history.  The children did a wonderful job!  To watch them grow up as babies and now as preschoolers taking part in the service as they worship God is such a treasure and delight.  Ashley did an outstanding job with her songs and signs!  Thank you to all who participated in the service.  Next week the choir and Praise Team will not be singing.  The children will be singing songs from VBS and we have Phil Jolly coming to share with us in song.  I’m looking forward to our next Sunday together.

The Children are singing the Call to Worship on Sunday morning – they will practice before Sunday School at 9:35 a.m.

Sanctuary Choir:  Rehearsal at 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 13th.

Praise Team:  A quick practice at 9:15.
